Too often I hear stories of people who lost control of a situation and the sadness it brings about for me is........ not something I can put into words. October is breast cancer awareness month but its also domestic violence awareness month. Something I feel people don't want to admit exists... But, it does. And its sickening, I know... Shout out to my mom. Someone who has survived several cases of domestic violence. Sexual assault awareness is very important to me, and until my dying day, I will do all within my power to help those victimized by SA.
Domestic violence awareness is also something I will stand by, until the day I die. Because, I've seen what it does to people. The way it hardens their heart. The way their eyes never glow like they once did...
Yesterday, a young girl asked me "Why do bad things happen to such good people"? How did I answer this question? "Because, they do.. Bad things JUST happen". That's all I got. It made me very upset that I couldn't offer this young girl anything more than "Just because".
I need a different answer than that. I feel like by saying "Just because" I am giving the people who hurt others, permission to do continue to do what they're doing. It's like brushing the situation under a rug. Poof, it's gone with just two words.
Well, NO MORE. Its time to stop saying "Just because". It's time to start admitting that some people are just sick and selfish. That some actually find pleasure in seeing others suffer...
No, I don't know how to prevent things like domestic violence and sexual assault. But, I will stand by the saying "Speak Up and Reach Out". It's time we start giving people the rawness of the evils in this world. No more 'brushing it under a rug'. This shit happens, and it isn't fair. But, it will not stop unless you use the power that you hold within you. There is a warrior inside of all of us.
I am sorry this post is all over the place and so scrambled, but the things I've typed above are the things rolling around inside my brain at the moment.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I gave a speech on domestic violence. The video below is how I started my speech. The video below is reality when it comes to situations like SA and DV. Watch it, please - take It in. Decide what you'll do with it..... **TRIGGER WARNING**
